Why it Matters.

Having access to psychiatric care increases the diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions, which reduces suicide rates and poor mental health outcomes.

Indicator Summary

Asian/Pacific Islander populations are most likely to live in communities with access to psychiatric care with 96% living in counties with adequate access to psychiatric care.
American Indian/Alaska Native populations are least likely to live in communities with psychiatric care, followed by White populations, with 60% and 77%, respectively, living in counties with adequate to access psychiatric care.
Six Northeastern states (Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York) perform the best on this indicator ranking among the top ten states with individuals living in counties with adequate access to psychiatric care.
Four Southern states (Mississippi, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Alabama) and four states in the Midwest (Iowa, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Missouri) rank among the bottom ten states with individuals living in counties least likely to have adequate access to psychiatric care.
