Key State Highlights

Texas generally fares poorer than other states in the nation in health care access with Black and Hispanic populations requiring the most improvement in most measures of opportunity.

  • Texans face the most challenges in health care access when compared to other states across the nation. Access to primary care, specifically, shows the deepest inequities within the state with Hispanic Texans falling behind the most.
  • Black residents in Texas not only struggle the most with housing and are less likely to live in areas of less crime and poverty, but Black individuals also have much higher rates of premature mortality and infant mortality compared to other populations.
  • Hispanic Texans not only face socioeconomic challenges in acquiring livable income and post-secondary education, but they also have some of the lowest rates to health care access such as access to primary care, having a personal doctor, and having health insurance coverage. Hispanic adults are also least likely to be in excellent or very good health compared to all other groups.
  • Texans as a whole are further from HOPE Goals in housing, food security, living in neighborhoods with less crime, livable income, post-secondary education, and health care access than other states. Likewise, Texas adults are the least likely to be in excellent/very good health status compared with adults in most other states.
