Key State Highlights.
Overall Illinois ranks average across socioeconomic opportunity and health care access; however, the state ranks below average on measures of safety and physical environment.
  • The Black community in Illinois face a host of challenges including housing, employment, and attaining a livable income. They are less likely to live in areas of lower crime (i.e., physical assault, homicide, and robbery), and generally have poorer health outcomes than other groups. Black youth aged 16 to 24 are also least likely to be enrolled in school or working. Black infants in the state are also most likely to be born at a low birth weight and least likely to survive to their first birthday.
  • The Hispanic population in Illinois are far less likely than others to attain a post-secondary education. Hispanic adults also have lower health insurance coverage rates and a smaller share of the population reporting very good or excellent health than the state rates for all racial/ethnic groups.
  • Although White individuals in Illinois face many fewer challenges in opportunity than other populations, they fare worse in access to primary care and psychiatric care compared to other groups.
  • American Indian/Alaska Native individuals face greater challenges than other groups in the state in being able to afford health care and having a dedicated health care provider.
