Key State Highlights.
While Washington ranks in the top states across measures of opportunity and health outcomes, many residents within the state face socioeconomic, environmental, and health care challenges.
  • Black adults in Washington are among the least likely to live in neighborhoods with low rates of robbery and face the greatest challenges in finding affordable housing and home ownership. Only 33% of Black residents in Washington own their home compared to the state rate of 65%.
  • Although Washington experiences better health outcomes than other states nationwide, Hispanic residents in the state still suffer from high inequities and have a lower rate of adults in excellent or very good health than the state rate for all groups. They also are least likely to have attained post-secondary education and face greater challenges in healthcare access, including having affordable care, access to a dedicated health care provider, and insurance coverage.
  • American Indian/Alaska Native populations have the highest rate of premature mortality and Black infants are more likely to be born with low birth weight and least likely to survive to their first birthday.
  • American Indian/Alaska Native populations in the state are least likely to have youth in school or working and are also among the least likely to earn a livable income.
