Key State Highlights.
North Dakota generally ranks in the top 15 on health outcomes; however, many residents face challenges with health care access and environmental opportunities.
  • American Indian/Alaska Native, Black, and Multiracial residents lag behind the state average on a number of indicators.
  • While on average North Dakota fares better than other states in the nation in socioeconomic measures, American Indian/Alaska Native individuals still face barriers in obtaining livable income and having youth in school or working.
  • American Indian/Alaska Native residents in the state have the worst rates of adult premature mortality compared to all other groups. They also face substantial challenges in access to primary and psychiatric care and health insurance coverage.
  • Black adults in North Dakota are least likely to own a home or live in areas with low rates of sexual assault. Only 9% of Black and 48% of Multiracial individuals in North Dakota own their home compared to the state rate of 68%.
