Being employed provides an important source of stability and benefits for most families, and directly influences whether a person can afford safe housing, quality childcare, and educational opportunities.

Indicator Summary
  • White populations have the highest rate of employment with 93% of individuals age 16 years and older in the U.S. labor force who are employed.
  • American Indian/Alaska Native and Black individuals have the lowest rates of employment with 90.4% and 89.5%, respectively, employed.  
  • Four Midwestern states (Ohio, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Kansas) and three Northeastern states (Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire) have high rates of employment ranking among the top ten states with individuals who are employed.
  • Four Western states (Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, and California) and four Southern states (Delaware, Florida, District of Columbia, Oklahoma) have low rates of employment ranking among the bottom ten states with individuals who are employed.
* Rates for American Indian/Alaska Native respondents in District of Columbia, Hawaii, Vermont and West Virginia are suppressed due to <50 respondents.
