Numbers listed on the maps are indicator summary scores, which measure how far a state has to go to meet the HOPE Goal (Distance to Goal) and how much variation there is across racial and ethnic groups within the state on the measure (Racial Inequity). Scores range from 0 to 100 with 100 indicating the state with the best combined performance. Hovering over a state reveals information on Distance to Goal and Racial Inequity separately.

Why it Matters.

Reductions in infant mortality rates are a longer term positive indicator that public health interventions are working to save infant lives.

Indicator Summary
  • Asian/Pacific Islander infants have the lowest rate of mortality compared to other racial/ethnic groups with 3.6 infants dying per 1,000 live births before their first birthday annually.
  • Black infants have the highest rate of mortality compared to other racial/ethnic groups with 10.3 infants dying per 1,000 live births before their first birthday annually.
  • Three Western states (California, Washington, and Oregon) and seven Northeastern states (Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, Rhode Island, and Connecticut) fare best on infant mortality, with these states ranking among the top ten states with the lowest rate of infant deaths.
  • Eight Southern states (Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Alabama, Oklahoma, West Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina) fare worse on infant mortality, with these states ranking among the bottom 10 states with the highest rate of infant deaths.
* Rates were suppressed for Black respondents in Montana and Wyoming; American Indians/Alaskan Native respondents in Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Rhode Island and West Virginia; and both American Indians/Alaskan Native and Multiracial infants in Vermont due to there being less than 400 births over the five-year period.
