Key State Highlights.
Californians generally enjoy better health care access and health outcomes than most people across the nation, despite facing great socioeconomic and environmental challenges.
  • While California ranks among the top states with the best health outcomes in premature and infant mortality, Black and American Indian/Alaska Native babies and adults face mortality rates that are at least twice as high as the state rate for the population overall.
  • More than half of households in California struggle with finding affordable and quality housing, and Black households face the greatest challenges.
  • California Black, American Indian/Alaska Native, and Hispanic adults have lower rates of post-secondary education than the rate for the state overall, with the Hispanic population being farthest from the HOPE goal.
  • The Hispanic population in California face not only socioeconomic inequities, but also have lower rates of health insurance coverage, access to a dedicated health care provider, and access to affordable care than the state rates for the population overall.
