Key State Highlights.
North Carolina ranks among the bottom five states in health care access, while also facing greater socioeconomic challenges than most states across the nation.
  • Black adults in North Carolina have a higher rate of premature mortality than the state rate for all adults and are least likely to live in areas with low physical assault. Black infants are most likely to be born at a low birth weight and are least likely to live to their first birthday compared to all other groups.
  • American Indian/Alaska Native residents are least likely to have adequate access to primary care providers and have the highest rate of premature mortality for adults. They are also least likely to live in opportunity-rich areas that have low crime rates.
  • Hispanic groups in the state face considerable socioeconomic and health care challenges, having the lowest rates of post-secondary education, livable income, health insurance coverage, access to affordable care, and dedicated health care providers. Hispanic adults also are in poorer health, with only 37% reporting excellent or very good health compared to the state rate of 51%.
  • Although generally White and Asian/Pacific Islander groups fare well across measures in North Carolina, White populations are less likely to have access to psychiatric care than the state rate for all groups. Asian/Pacific Islander residents are less likely to live in areas of low robbery than the state rate for all groups.
